11-11-2011: Researchers show how to break quantum cryptography by faking quantum entanglement

Their general approach can be summed up as follows: if you can fool a detector into thinking a classical light pulse is actually a quantum light pulse, then you might just be able to defeat a quantum cryptographic system.

When Bob and Alice compare notes, they get the right answers and assume everything is on the up and up.

2-24-12: Entanglement takes off

Quantum cryptography is set to go into orbit

Some of their efforts, such as building a quantum computer capable of solving problems which stump today's machines (for example, finding prime factors of numbers with hundreds of digits or trawling through large databases) are still years away—though, as we report in this week's print edition, progress is being made.

This can be used to detect Eve, the eavesdropper.

4-4-2012: Quantum computer built inside a diamond

DECOHERENCE: A team of scientists has built a quantum computer in a diamond, the first of its kind to include protection against "decoherence" -- noise that prevents the computer from functioning properly.

The “Appearance” of Evil Mistranslation in 1 Thessalonians 5:22

ANALYSIS: One thing that nags me at me when I cite the Bible is that I am cherry-picking because I don't believe a lot of what it says about sex. Specifically, the idea that the only correct way to live is to only have sex with one person in your whole life. Obvioulsy I don't agree and in fact if someone asked about that I would tell them exactly the opposite. What was the idiom associated with the original words? Jesus didn't speak English so he never said anything about "illicit sexual activity" and the areas of language that pertain to sex are often the ones that most heavily rely on idiom. Is there another way to look at this? When Jesus and the disciples were travelling with women "who gave them comfort" what was that exactly? Certainly I agree that is sinful to go around breaking a bunch of young girls hearts but I just don't see that for sex in general. I can see why you shouldn't have a bunch of bastard children that you can't take care of but, again, that is something beyond just sex.

FACT: The above article focuses on a possible misinterpretation of Paul's words but look at this other thing that he wrote in the preceding verses. I tested the part where it says sex is bad in almost every circumstance and I can't hold onto it. The ban on sex is overly broad and it doesn't make sense to me.

Similarly with the picture on the right today... Protestants don't bother me at all and everything I know about the Bible I learned in the Southern Baptist Church. Heathens on the other hand... extirpation sounds exactly correct. It makes a lot of sense to me.

Is this the first written mention of Jesus? 2,000-year-old lead tablets found in a remote cave ARE genuine, claim researchers

The codices are covered in eight-pointed stars, symbolic of the coming of the messiah, and they mention the name of Jesus.

"Jesus was seeking to restore the Temple. To put back that which had been lost in the reforms that came before his time."

The official explanation of events that has been pushed by the Mexican government has been dis-proven by various experts, leading to multiple accusations of a cover-up.

Pentagon and intelligence community chiefs have urged Obama to remove the head of the NSA

The recommendation, delivered to the White House last month, was made by Defense Secretary Ashton B. Carter and Director of National Intelligence James R. Clapper Jr.

Action has been delayed, some administration officials said, because relieving Rogers of his duties is tied to another controversial recommendation: to create separate chains of command at the NSA and the military’s cyberwarfare unit, a recommendation by Clapper and Carter that has been stalled because of other issues.

The news comes as Rogers is being considered by President-elect Donald Trump to be his nominee for director of national intelligence to replace Clapper as the official who oversees all 17 U.S. intelligence agencies.

In a move apparently unprecedented for a military officer, Rogers, without notifying superiors, traveled to New York to meet with Trump on Thursday at Trump Tower

Outsiders take power in Trump's Washington

People once confined to the political fringes will be at the center of power in Donald Trump’s White House.

Elizabeth Warren (D-Mass.) issued a statement calling on Trump to rescind Sessions’s nomination. If he did not do so, she said, “it will fall to the Senate to exercise fundamental moral leadership for our nation and all of its people.”

On the right, there is enthusiasm rather than concern. Some are delighted that Trump’s appointments suggest no trimming of his sails but, rather, a rededication to pursuing the policies that resonated with voters.

The market is ignoring a massive elephant in the room at Valeant

We're talking alleged kickbacks, some wire fraud, Travel Act Conspiracy. But what's missing is any mention of anything that the Department of Justice has been investigating Valeant for, for over a year.

They have, in lawsuits, accused Valeant of not only shirking its duty in failing to disclose the existence of Philidor, but also of allegedly engaging in fraud in order to get insurers to pay for expensive Valeant drugs when they normally would reject said payments.

Executives at Valeant must have known about the "fraudulent scheme" Philidor was running in order to reduce their volume.

The mathematics of science's broken reward system

The models suggest that when researchers apply strategies that boost individual and institutional performance metrics, by publishing papers as often as they can in high-profile journals, scientific research as a whole becomes less efficient and reliable.

“Whenever quantitative metrics are used as proxies to evaluate and reward scientists those metrics become open to exploitation if it is easier to do so than to directly improve the quality of research.”

That’s basically a statement of Goodhart’s law, familiar to economists: when a measure of success becomes a target, it loses its worth.

I DISAGREE: "Scientists have nothing to fear, and much to gain, from having the lens of science turned back on its own conduct."

1975, just a year after Warnecke’s 33 Thomas Street building was completed, the NSA became embroiled in one of the biggest scandals in the U.S. intelligence community’s history.

NSA representatives “do not have access to any secure room or space within our owned portion of the 33 Thomas Street building.” When pressed on whether any room within 33 Thomas Street contains equipment used for the purposes of NSA surveillance, an AT&T spokesperson pointed to a 1983 deed and declaration filed with New York City indicating that Verizon’s predecessor company maintained ownership of three floors and a basement floor in the building.

Final NASA Eagleworks Paper Confirms Promising EmDrive Results, Proposes Theoretical Model

“[The] supporting physics model used to derive a force based on operating conditions in the test article can be categorized as a nonlocal hidden-variable theory, or pilot-wave theory for short.”

“If the vacuum is indeed mutable and degradable as was explored, then it might be possible to do/extract work on/from the vacuum, and thereby be possible to push off of the quantum vacuum and preserve the laws of conservation of energy and conservation of momentum.”

A recent Motherboard EmDrive article was deleted yesterday by the moderators of the popular subreddit r/Physics because they “consider the EM-Drive to be unscientific.”

ANALYSIS: Did they test for the effect with an unpowered conical section? It might be possible to tune this effect so that the cavity's characteristic fluctuations are the ones that drive the anomalous thrust.

A new theory SMASHes problems

There are infinitely many such models, so to grab the reader’s attention, you need a good motivation why your model in particular is worth the attention. Ballesteros et al do this by tackling not one but five different problems! The name SM*A*S*H stands for Standard Model*Axion*Seesaw*Higgs portal inflation.

SOLVES THE STRONG CP PROBLEM: "In the SMASH model, the axion gives rise to dark matter by leaving behind a condensate and particles that are created in the early universe from the decay of topological defects (strings and domain walls). The axion gets its mass from an additional quark-like field (denoted with Q in the paper), and also solves the strong CP problem."
